Bunge adopts oil packaging of just 14 grams

Bunge presents the lightest soybean oil packaging on the Brazilian market. The new 900 ml PET bottle of Soya soy oil weighs just 14 grams – four grams less than current ones – which represents a weight reduction of 22%.

The bottle was developed by Amcor, and represents the packaging manufacturer's entry into the edible oil market in Brazil. Amcor responded to the challenge that Bunge posed to its suppliers by developing a 14-gram bottle.

“This new bottle is a huge technological achievement because we were able to reproduce the shape and specifications of the current bottle, but with an important weight reduction”, says Ivan Assenço, Amcor's R&D process coordinator.

design and engineering

Weight reduction is an important differentiator in the edible oil market. Amcor developed a new preform that maintained the same bottle shape while optimizing vertical load resistance, wall thickness, material distribution and stacking resistance. The bottle required a high draw ratio, so the Amcor team conducted a finite element analysis (FEA) study to optimize the design and meet wall thickness requirements. For the consumer, the redesign also maintains the same look, feel and handling experience. “During a highly focused three-year development project, we leveraged our R&D, design and engineering expertise to create a unique bottle for edible oil,” explains Assenço.

Project

“In this project, we had many challenges, from the design of a bottle with less plastic to the introduction of new filling technologies in our plants, but the result was excellent”, says Paulo Silvério, purchasing director at Bunge in Brazil. The lightweight bottle offers sustainability benefits by reducing raw material usage by around 4,4 tonnes of material per year. As a result, Bunge has improved its production efficiencies and reduced transport costs.
