Launch

Coca-Cola has announced the launch of a “hard seltzer” version of Topo Chico in the United States, marking the company's debut in alcoholic beverages in its core market. Expected to be marketed in 2021, Topo Chico Hard Seltzer will be an adaptation of the traditional sparkling water to the popular format of drinks with alcohol and fruit flavors, with a new packaging.

The company claims that before launching in the United States, the new product should be tested in some Latin American capitals later this year.

The idea of Coca-Cola is to take advantage of the wave of popularity of ready-to-drinks on the market to diversify options against the drop in sales of soft drinks, in addition to reinforcing the carbonated water section of the company's catalog.

Topo Chico, drink of Mexican origin

Topo Chico, a drink of Mexican origin, became revered among American consumers, especially in Texas, after Coca-Cola bought the company in 2017 and started investing in its promotion. In 2019, the brand's sales grew by 39% and reached US$130 million.

This isn't Coca-Cola's first investment in alcoholic beverages. Since 2018, Coke has been selling in Japan Chu-hi, a brand of carbonated drinks with alcohol exclusive in the country.
