Coca-Cola replaces plastic with cardboard

Coca-Cola Europe has announced that it will replace all plastic wraps that protect soda cans with cardboard wrappers. The solution, named KeelClip, will be adopted across Europe.

The brand initiative is the first in the non-alcoholic ready-to-drink beverage market.

The KeelClip was developed by Graphic Packaging International (GPI). The solution completely covers the lids of the cans to keep them clean, has holes for easy transport and minimizes the amount of paper needed.

effective for packaging

According to GPI, KeelClip technology is effective for packs of various diameters and heights. “This means we can provide safe and effective packaging without the need for secondary plastic,” says Steve Gould, Director of Product Development and Marketing GPI's Beverage Division in Europe.

Coca-Cola will invest 15 million euros in the packaging solution and promises to remove the shrink wrap from all multipack packaging in all European Union markets by the end of 2021, saving two thousand tons of plastic and three thousand tons of CO2 annually .

Coca-Cola plans to introduce the KeelClip walk this year initially in Ireland, Poland and the Netherlands, and then in early 2020 in Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Romania. The cartons will be used in all multipacks of up to eight cans.
